Series vets dominate practice
The familiar blue No. 10 SunTrust Pontiac Riley will be replaced by a bright orange Dallara in Saturday’s GAINSCO Grand Prix of Miami at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
 
Round 2 of the 2008 Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Cask No. 16 is part of SpeedJam at Homestead-Miami Speedway, and will join the unified IndyCar Series season-opening GAINSCO Auto Insurance Indy 300, a concert, fun and entertainment for the entire family.
 
Max Angelelli and new co-driver Michael Valiante will drive Wayne Taylor Racing’s new SunTrust car in the 109-lap event that takes the green flag at 3 p.m. Saturday. Helio Castroneves and Danica Patrick lead the IndyCar Series stars “under the lights” at 220 mph on the 1.5-mile oval.
 
Practice for the Rolex Series begins at 2 p.m. Friday, with additional practice and 3 p.m. qualifying Friday. Friday’s schedule also includes opening IndyCar Series practice at 11:30 a.m., with four-lap qualifying beginning at 6:30 p.m. SpeedJam also includes a Firestone Indy Lights race.
 
Taylor Racing has one of two new Dallaras debuting at Homestead-Miami Speedway, with Kevin Doran Racing fielding the No. 77 Kodak Ford for Memo Gidley and Brad Jaeger.
 
Lola will make its competition debut in the series with a pair of Tracy Krohn Racing Pontiac Lolas. While Krohn is hopeful to co-drive the No. 75 entry with Eric van do Peole, Roberto Moreno is on stand by for the team.
 
Ricardo Zonta and Nic Jonsson pilot the No. 76 car.
 
Also set to debut is the No. 55 Ferrari 430 Challenge in the GT class for Scott Tucker and Ed Zabinski. Andy Wallace helped the team in testing with the new Crawford-built car.
 
Series vets dominated Thursday afternoon’s opening practice. Scott Pruett ran a lap of 113.699 mph to lead the session in the No. 01 Telmex Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates Lexus Riley he shares with Memo Rojas.
 
Pruett, running new Riley bodywork for the first time, was under his 2004 track record.
 
Second was Rolex 24 At Daytona pole sitter Oswaldo Negri in the Michael Shank Racing Ford Riley, 112.883 mph, followed by Brumos Porsche Riley driver David Law, 112.836 mph.
 
Robin Liddell led GT practice with a lap of 104.243 mph in the Stephenson Motorsports Pontiac GXP.
