First-year UM ‘NASCAR Kinetics’ team looks to make its mark

Prior to Race 6 at Martinsville last weekend, the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series had produced five different winners and teams for the first time in six years en route to Ford Championship Weekend in Miami Nov. 18-20. Five students from the University of Miami are in a NASCAR race of a different sort.

In January, five students from the University of Miami’s School of Education were selected to participate in ‘NASCAR Kinetics’, representing the Hurricanes’ first entry into the groundbreaking motorsports program. Through a promotional partnership with Homestead-Miami Speedway, these potential leaders in the racing industry will be hosting an official NASCAR viewing party on the evening of Saturday, April 9th at ‘Smoke’t Southern Kitchen & Tap’ beginning at 6:30 PM. The ‘M&M’S Makes Race Day Fun’ viewing party is open to the public and will feature free food, racing themed dinner specials, interactive games, as well as numerous giveaways for those in attendance.

Using a $1,000 budget for each viewing party, teams from around the country are judged on creativity, feasibility, content and presentation. ‘NASCAR Kinetics’ is a national marketing competition which offers select college students an opportunity to become a NASCAR brand ambassador. The winning team receives an all-expenses paid trip to the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race in May.

“The team has worked very hard to create an exciting event with a lot of fun activities that will give all guests a glimpse into the NASCAR experience,” said University of Miami team leader Justin Leiser. “If we can get ‘Smoke’t’ packed on the evening of April 9th with people who want to watch NASCAR, it will help us accomplish our objectives for the program and our goal of winning a trip to Charlotte.”

This innovative program gives the teams an opportunity to work through real-world business challenges facing the motorsports industry. Each student chosen for the ‘NASCAR Kinetics’ program is tasked with fostering brand awareness throughout their college and community.

“Three of the five students in the program have come through our internship program so I expect big things,” said Matt Becherer, President of Homestead-Miami Speedway. “Certainly this is a way for a future purveyor of the sport to gain practical, real-life experiences related to motorsports as well as sports entertainment in general.”
