2/28/2008
It was Spring Training at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Feb. 27--open testing in advance of the March 29 IndyCar Series season kickoff at HMS--and the stars were aligned in South Florida. IRL CEO Tony George and Champ Car co-owner Kevin Kalkhoven welcomed IndyCar drivers and international media to provide an open-wheel rundown on the two series uniting for the first time since the 1996 split.
"SpeedJam 2008 will represent not only the IndyCar Series season opener, but also the very first race in the IndyCar Series/Champ Car reunification—a historic day at Homestead-Miami," said track president Curtis Gray. “Now add to that the unprecedented running two of motorsports' marquee races on the very same day—IndyCar Series and Grand-Am—and you’re talking about the absolute best that North American open-wheel racing has to offer here, right here in South Florida on March 29.”
Also at South Florida's Championship Track on Wednesday were two-time Indy 500 winner/“Dancing with the Stars” champion Helio Castroneves; perennial contender/"Sports Illustrated" swimsuit model Danica Patrick; three-time Homestead-Miami IndyCar Series winner Dan Wheldon; Miami's own Tony Kanaan, Ryan Briscoe, Marco Andretti, Hideki Mutoh, Scott Dixon and all the IndyCar stars.

In addition to hosting high-profile sanctioned events, Homestead-Miami Speedway is “hot” more than 280 days each year in playing host to activities that include: race-car and manufacturer testing; car-club events; driving schools and ride-along programs; charitable events; film, movie and photo shoots; product launches; motorcycle racing; and the track’s weekly Friday night “T-n-T/Test ’n Tune” car competition that opens up Pit Road to the public as an alternative to illegal street racing.
