MIAMI–For anyone who ever has watched a NASCAR race and gotten so charged up he or she wanted to jump right into the car alongside the driver, have we got an opportunity for you….
Homestead-Miami Speedway will host its first-ever viewing party for the historic 50th running of the Daytona 500 on Sunday, Feb. 17, in the luxurious Champions Club facility overlooking the Speedway’s 1.5-mile oval track. Adding the ultimate in interactivity, the Richard Petty Driving Experience will be on track providing stock car ride-a-longs at speeds up to 160 MPH, at a special discounted rate for Daytona Watch Party attendees.
Doors at Homestead-Miami Speedway—home to the IndyCar Series season-opening SpeedJam (March 29) and NASCAR’s series-crowning Ford Championship Weekend (Nov. 14-16)—will open at 1 p.m. with the race flag set to wave at 3:30 p.m. Hooters will provide a specially priced food-and-drink menu; and music, show cars, activities and prizes will be the norm throughout the day—assuring one festive Sunday for both the ardent and casual race fan. Admission is free.
“It’s pretty extraordinary that NASCAR has chosen Daytona and Homestead-Miami to open and close the NASCAR season, respectively, for the seventh consecutive year,” said HMS President Curtis Gray. “As track neighbors, we’re excited to commemorate Florida’s phenomenal motorsports standing and throw a great party at the same time.”
Newly purchased high-definition televisions will keep viewers in the middle of the action as two-time defending Cup champion Jimmie Johnson kicks off his run at becoming the first Cup three-peater since Cale Yarborough. NASCAR’s 2008 season opener also marks Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s first spin with a new paint scheme—and renewed championship aspirations—as a member of Hendrick Motorsports; and the full-time debut for the Car of Tomorrow.
Prizes to be awarded to raffle/trivia contest winners include: tickets to IndyCar’s season-opening SpeedJam on March 29 at Homestead-Miami Speedway; tickets to the 2009 Daytona 500; an autographed racing helmet from 2007 Daytona 500 winner Kevin Harvick; and more.
“To hear the sounds and enjoy the smells of a speedway during the Daytona 500 brings a whole new element to the fan-viewing experience,” Gray said. “To then get into a car and race South Florida’s Championship Track the very same day—well, that’s taking things to another level.”
Homestead-Miami Speedway plays host to SpeedJam 2008 on March 29, as the IndyCar Series kicks off the ’08 campaign with the GAINSCO Auto Insurance Indy 300, the GAINSCO Grand Prix of Miami and the IndyPro Series Miami 100. SpeedJam also includes a full-day festival of car shows, Memphis Barbeque, kids activities and live music.
