On Sunday, July 31, Homestead-Miami Speedway and Special Olympics Florida - Miami-Dade County will host a “Car Wash and Ride” event where participants will have the rare opportunity to get their car washed and drive around the same 1.5-mile oval track that hosts the championship races in NASCAR’s three national series.

    One of the participants in the weekend’s competition is 16-year-old Ernie Francis Jr., who grew up in Kendall and now lives in Southwest Ranches. For him, Homestead-Miami Speedway is familiar territory, having started racing go-karts at the track’s adjacent go-kart course at the tender age of four. At 13 he began racing on the road course track.

Santa and the Speedway employees delivered wrapped presents to the pediatric patients at the two care facilities, a tradition that began in 2007.

    At 3 p.m. today, Homestead-Miami Speedway made history at the highly anticipated and unpredictable all-new Chase format finale, the Ford EcoBoost 400, becoming home of the first-ever NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion decided in the Championship Round. Kevin Harvick, driver of the No. 4 Budweiser Chevrolet, was crowned the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion.

    CHASE ELLIOTT CLAIMS NATIONWIDE SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP; MATT KENSETH CAPTURES FORD ECOBOOST 300 SATURDAY AT HOMESTEAD-MIAMI SPEEDWAY

    In his first season racing in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, Chase Elliott, driver of the No. 9 NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet car for JR Motorsports, was officially anointed the 2014 series champion Saturday evening at Homestead-Miami Speedway following a 17th place finish in the Ford EcoBoost 300. He secured the title with a fifth place finish at Phoenix International Raceway last week. Tonight, he officially became the youngest NASCAR champion in any NASCAR National Series. He is also the first Rookie of the Year to win a NASCAR National Series Championship.
